EPC Rounder Overview

History of the EPC Rounder - On December 23, 1993, Dr. Bertram V. Burke (co-founder of Every Penny Counts, Inc. - EPC) filed his Rounder invention for checking/debit/credit card accounts with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).

On August 29, 2000, the USPTO issued the Rounder patent as number US 6,112,191. (Since the patent contains two inventions, to review the Rounder patent start at Column 11, Line 24.)

In January 2007, EPC filed a lawsuit in the Federal Court located in Ft. Myers, FL asserting that Bank of America, using its "Keep the Change" program, infringed Patent U.S. 6,112,191. (Case No 2:07 - CV - 42 FTM - 99SPC)

EPC Rounder - The Every Penny Counts (EPC) Rounder program allows customers to Rounder their debit and/or credit card transactions by variable amounts ($1, $3, $5 or more) and have the saved funds go to savings, investing and/or nonprofit giving. As an alternative, the EPC Rounder program also allows customers to add $1 or more to their check/debit or credit card account entries.

Benefits for Banks Licensing the EPC Rounder!

Once your bank signs up for the Every Penny Counts (EPC) program….your customers will jump at the chance to Round up their debit and/or credit card transactions for savings and/or investing.

When Your Institution Offers the EPC Rounder.....You Will Gain:

  • Increased deposits & interchange fees

  • More new accounts & new customers

  • Higher customer satisfaction and retention

  • Greater product differentiation

  • Unique cross selling tool

  • Top-of-wallet positioning for your card

  • Rights to other EPC patented products

Your Customers Will Enjoy:

  • Selecting the dollar amount of their rounding, i.e. $1, $3, $5, etc. or a fixed dollar amount per entry

  • Choosing how the rounded funds should be used, i.e. savings, investment, money market, etc.

  • Automatic convenience, satisfaction & ease

  • Simplicity of a onetime, lifetime savings decision

  • The flexibility to increase or decrease the rounding or per entry amount

Here’s How it Works:

1. Customer establishes an EPC Rounder account with your financial institution & opens up a savings, an investing, and/or a money market account, etc.

2. Customer instructs their bank to round up to $1, $3, $5, etc. or to add a dollar amount per account entry ($1, $2, $5, etc.)

3. Customer makes a purchase using your bank’s debit card.

4. Debit card data (transaction amount(s) or number of account entries) is received by your bank. The transaction amount plus the customer’s rounder / entry amount is debited against the customer’s checking account.

Here's an example using a $4.43 purchase with a $3.00 rounder established by the customer. The total debit against the account would be $7.00 and the rounder amount would be $2.57.

Licensed Banks Receive:

  • The rights to offer rounding of checking/debit and/or credit cards per Patent # 6,112,191.

  • The rights to use the trademark “Every Penny Counts”. ( Go to www.RiversideNB.com )

  • Use of the Rounder Profit Model.

  • Very Important. A “Grandfather Clause” that protects your rights to continue the Every Penny Counts program, in the event that a competing bank(s) buys “exclusive” rights to market the program regionally or nationally.

Every Penny Counts is the only Rounder program operating with a valid patent!

Important Note: Some banks are hesitant to license with EPC because they fear that Bank of America will sue them and stop them from offering the EPC Rounder program. The fact is Bank of America cannot sue them because they do not have a patent, only an application, which has been rejected twice.

For a history of Bank of America's patent application, go to: http://portal.uspto.gov/external/portal/pair

Type in the two words, which the site shows you and then enter Bank of America's Application #, which is 11161418. Once in the Bibliographic Data, click on "Image File Wrapper". On rejections, note all the references to the inventor, Bertram Burke, Ph.D. (EPC co-founder), for rounding, etc.

U.S. Savings Steadily Declining

“The rate of personal saving in the U.S. has been declining steadily since the 1980’s….and hit an astounding zero in June 2005.”                                                       Source: Federal Reserve Board of Governors

I
n fact, Americans have one of the lowest rates of saving in the industrialized world.

Every Penny Counts makes it easy for America to get back into the savings habit. It’s easy, convenient and couldn’t be more simple.

Customer satisfaction increases as savers begin to see their savings accumulate. Studies have shown that once people begin to see their savings account grow, they are motivated to add more.

Studies have shown that once people begin to see their savings account grow, they are motivated to add more. There is also the “good feeling” that comes when the saver begins to see their money accumulate.
