Core Patents - On February 18, 1993 EPC created and, subsequently, patented the first mag stripe “Open” and “Closed” Gift/Prepaid Card program.

EPC core patents protect the loading of credits into merchant or bank Gift/Prepaid Card accounts:

  • Depositing store change (both coins and bills) at the POS

  • Converting coupon or rebates into account credits

  • Direct depositing of cash into a remote terminal

Once funds are loaded into an
Open - bank issued card - or a Closed - merchant issued card, cardholders can debit from their gift card accounts at millions of merchant locations.

Developing Problems - As merchant gift card programs have evolved in the marketplace, the following problems have become obvious:

  • Merchants do not have a reportable sale until the owner of a card makes a purchase

  • Card issuers can no longer put expiration dates on cards

  • Merchants can no longer charge monthly or annual card accounting fees

  • The breakage (10-15% of the card funds) must be turned over to unclaimed property authorities

  • Federal/state authorities can not earn tax revenue on the breakage amount when it is escheated

  • If a merchant goes bankrupt, the consumer loses all of the funds remaining on their card

EPC Advanced Program – In order to solve the above cited problems, EPC invented the Merchandise Card.

The Merchandise Card is an alternative to the core gift/prepaid card that provides

     (a) consumers with immediate ownership of store merchandise and

     (b) merchants with an immediate sale.

Notice of Allowance has been issued for this pending patent by the USPTO.
